First Impressions
It never ceases to amaze me how unfriendly the first few seconds of arriving at any building or business is. You’ll see signs: “No Parking,” “No Soliciting,” “No Loitering,” and worse. Why would you greet a parade of customers with “No” instead of the word “Welcome!” It makes no sense. The reason? People who own or run the business don’t think like customers. They have meetings about satisfaction and service and then send the wrong message from the first second the customer enters the door. Brilliant. How are you greeting your customers? Any different? How many ways do you say “No” to customers at your business? Can you find one sign with the word “Welcome” on it? (Customer Satisfaction Is Worthless)
Those That Really Mean Something
The following is the philosophy of the late Charles Schultz, the creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip. You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just read this straight through, and you’ll get the point:
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor or actress.
6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.
How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners. Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. Name a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
Easier?
The Lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards - - - they are the ones that care. (trefdesigns.com)

Marketing.............................. Sometimes as you work with an ad agency or marketing person, they forget that you know your product and customers better than anyone. So keep in mind that it is you who has looked customers in the eye and listened to their needs and explained your product. You and only you know best the special story that makes a customer’s heart sing with glee. You know what is important and what is not. You know the buzz words the customer uses. This means that with whomever you work on literature, ads, or trade shows, you are the expert. You prepare the draft of the literature. Don’t be intimidated. Their creative person can hone your rendition into beautiful prose. But it’s up to you to incorporate what “feels right.” (Rethinking Business To Business Marketing)

LIFE IS SHORT AND FRIENDS ARE FEW
(A different perspective)
One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?" "It was great, Dad." "Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked. "Oh yeah," said the son. "So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father. The son answered: "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them." The boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are." Isn't perspective a wonderful thing? (Lopatin)
